House receives information on changes to ministerial nomenclature

H

ouse of Representatives speaker Setya Novanto said the House had received President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s letter on Wednesday informing it of changes to the names of ministries in his administration.

'€œI'€™ve just received a letter dated Oct. 21 from President Jokowi. In the letter, he proposed additions or alterations to the nomenclatures of the ministries,'€ Setya said, as quoted by kompas.com in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The DPR speaker further said the sending of the letter was in line with mechanisms regulated by Article 17 (4) of the 1945 Constitution and Article 6 of Law No.39/2008 on state ministries. The articles stipulated that the establishment of ministries by a new administration must take place 14 days after its inauguration at the latest.

'€œThus, the deadline [for the establishment of the Jokowi administration'€™s ministries] will fall on Nov. 3,'€ said Setya.

He reiterated that, as stated on Article 17 of the 1945 Constitution, the nomenclature of three ministries, namely the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Home Affairs Ministry and the Defense Ministry, were permanent in nature.

'€œAs stated on Article 17, the House has 17 days to respond to the letter; therefore, we will as soon as possible respond to President Jokowi'€™s letter so that we can immediately carry out our people'€™s economic programs,'€ said Setya.

In September, Jokowi and the then vice president-elect, Jusuf Kalla, announced that they would make three new ministries, namely the Agrarian Ministry, the Population Ministry and the Creative Economy Ministry.

They would also change the names of several ministries: the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry into the Maritime Ministry, the Public Works Ministry into the Infrastructure Ministry, the Agriculture Ministry into the Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Ministry and the Education and Culture Ministry into the Research, Technology and Higher Education Ministry.
