he National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA) has recorded over 21 million child abuse cases in Indonesia over the last four years.
The commission chairman, Arist Merdeka Sirait, explained that according to his commission's reports, up to 21,689,797 cases had been reported since 2010 occurring across the archipelago's 34 provinces and 179 cities.
'The reality of this emergency situation is supported by constant reports of child abuse. Around 42 to 58 percent of the cases include sexual abuse, physical abuse, kidnapping, economic exploitation and trafficking,' Arist said on Thursday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
In order to address this issue, Arist suggested that the public also played a role to help the commission by voicing their concerns and taking collective actions to stop the practice of child exploitation, desertion and abuse.
He added that in other countries, methods such as crowd-funding campaigns were utilized to support civil awareness and child abuse prevention campaigns.
The commission's Gotong Royong Fund was deemed a success by Arist, who said that it had helped their development programs succeed.
Various child abuse cases have been in the public spotlight throughout this year, including the child sex abuse scandal allegedly perpetrated by Jakarta International School (JIS) cleaning staff in the school and another child sex abuse case involving the owner of an orphanage in Tangerang. The suspects in both cases are currently on trial. (dyl/nfo)(++++)
