ndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) secretary-general Pramono Anung said that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had not intervened in the selection of ministers by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla.
He said that Jokowi and Kalla had only asked the KPK to help them investigate whether 43 ministerial candidates were involved in graft because they wanted to appoint 'clean' ministers.
He said that when the KPK had compiled its report, Jokowi and Kalla would decide who would be appointed ministers.
"The KPK only makes recommendations," he said on Thursday evening as quoted by tempo.co.
"The prerogative to choose ministers is solely the President's. He will consider the KPK's recommendations," he added.
Pramono said he hoped that the public understood Jokowi and Kalla's decision as they were looking for clean ministers.
He said Jokowi and Kalla did not want to appoint ministers that in the future may be named graft suspects by the KPK, as had happened with the previous government.
Under the leadership of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the KPK named several ministers graft suspects, namely former youth and sports affairs minister Andi Malarangeng, former energy and mineral resources minister Jero Wacik, former health minister Siti Fadilah Supari and former religion affairs minister Suryadharma Ali.
