One dead in brutal daytime robbery

A

gang of alleged robbers in Pekanbaru, Riau, dragged a victim from his motorcycle in busy traffic in front of the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) office on Jl. Sudirman, on Monday.

The victim, Mulyono, 58, died at the scene, while the robbers reportedly got away with tens of millions of rupiah.

Pekanbaru City Police Crime and Intelligence Unit chief Comr. Hariwiyawan Harun said autopsy results showed that the victim died from severe blood loss after being pulled from his motorcycle.

'€œBlood oozed from his mouth and nose after his head hit the ground. No stab wounds were found on
any part of his body,'€ Hariwiyawan said.

He added that the robbery, which took place in broad daylight, was beyond his expectations as such crimes usually occurred at night, targeting workers returning home.

Based on a crime scene investigation and statements from a number of witnesses, police have obtained a description of the assailants.

'€œThe assailants could easily be identified because they did not wear helmets. Police are currently searching for them and, hopefully, they can be caught quickly and the motive behind the case can be disclosed,'€ said Hariwiyawan.

A number of eyewitnesses said that, at first glance, the robbery looked like a regular traffic accident. They said the victim was riding his motorcycle toward the city center, from Jl. Harapan Raya.

At a corner before the Bulog office, the victim was wedged between by four unidentified persons on two motorcycles. The victim struggled to free himself, but the robbers managed to hit his motorcycle with theirs.

One of the perpetrators then reportedly pulled Mulyono from his moving motorbike, causing him to fall onto asphalt in front of a Pekanbaru Trans Metro bus shelter.

Onlookers then approached the victim to help, but were scared upon seeing the four assailants also approaching the victim while wielding sharp weapons resembling short samurai swords.

One robber reportedly immediately removed Mulyono'€™s jacket, before fleeing along Jl. Pinang, as the victim lay on the road in a pool of blood. Mulyono'€™s body was later taken to the Arifin Achmad General Hospital.

Mulyono'€™s wife, Wati, said her husband was a grocery store owner. She said he often carried cash before depositing it at a private bank in the city.

'€œI don'€™t know the exact amount of money [that was stolen]. It might be tens of millions. He kept it in his jacket, as usual,'€ she said.
