The City Council has officially announced that Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama is the governor of Jakarta until 2017.
Council Speaker Prasetyo Edi Marsudi said during the plenary session on Friday that the announcement was based on the decision during a leadership meeting the previous day.
'I hereby announce and propose the endorsement of the inauguration of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama as governor,' he said.
Prasetyo said he would immediately send the recommendation of the inauguration from the City Council to the President through the Home Ministry.
'The Council speaker will send the letter,' he said, greeted by applause from the audience.
Only 44 out of 106 council members attended the 10-minute meeting, none of the deputy speakers showed up at the plenary session. The deputy speakers ' Muhammad Taufik of Gerindra, Triwisaksana of the Prosperous Justice Party, Ferrial Sofyan of the National Mandate Party and Abraham Lunggana of the United Development Party'previously opposed the appointment of Ahok as governor.
