ust a few hours after being named the new Jakarta Governor by the City Council, Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama has topped the trending topics on US-based social media Twitter through #GubernurAhok.

Despite strong protests from the hard-line Islam Defenders Front (FPI), netizens across the archipelago have celebrated in their Twitter accounts because the capital city is now led by Ahok, a Christian of Chinese descent, who is well known as a leader who stands in the front line in combating graft and cutting red tape.

'€œ#GubernurAhok Congratulations on your inauguration. We are standing behind you Mr. Governor @basuki_btp,'€ said a netizen with account @erwinojoedanadi as quoted by Antara news agency.

Meanwhile, @JimTechz82 wrote, '€œCongratulations, Sir. I hope you can develop Jakarta #GubernurAhok.'€

In October 2013, Ahok won the prestigious 2013 Bung Hatta Anti-Corruption Award for his integrity and his campaign for budget transparency.

According to the 1945 Constitution, Ahok was in line to replace then Jakarta governor Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo after the latter was elected as the country'€™s seventh president. (alz/nfo)(++++)
