The Indonesian government will only send skilled laborers to work overseas from 2017.
'We will stop sending laborers who will work as domestic helpers abroad. We will only send certified skilled labors overseas,' Krishna Djelani, the acting director of Indonesian Citizen Protection and Indonesian Law Body, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), said as quoted by Antara news agency on Wednesday.
Krishna said the regulation would be brought into force as Indonesia wanted to fix the migrant workers placement management issue and increase protection for its citizens working abroad.
'Only sending skilled labors will guarantee their safety, as their work contracts will be more specific,' he explained.
As one of the migrant workers' stakeholders, Krishna observed that the MOFA would also coordinate with other institutions and ministries, and one of the initiatives in progress was the preparation of a valid database of Indonesian migrant workers.
