T

he Purbalingga regency council in Central Java has canceled the procurement of new official cars for council leaders worth Rp 1.6 billion (US$134,000), following protests from a number of circles. The procurement was deemed unnecessary as the previous cars were still in good condition.

Purbalingga regency council speaker Tongat confirmed to the media that the allocation for the new cars had been canceled.

'€œWe have canceled the allocation of Rp 1.6 billion in the 2015 proposed regency budget. We respect the feedback from various circles,'€ Tongat told the media in Purbalingga on Friday.

He said that initially the budget of Rp 1.6 billion was to be used to buy four cars, for the council speaker and three deputy speakers. With the cancellation, the council speakers would use the current official cars used by speakers during the 2009-2014 period.

'€œThey are still in good condition and we don'€™t mind using them again,'€ said Tongat.

He added five factions grouped in the Red-and-White Coalition at the council had proposed the procurement. They were the Golkar Party, Gerindra Party, National Mandate Party, Justice and Prosperous Party and Democratic Party factions.

'€œThey fully supported the allocation of Rp 1.6 billion to procure new official cars for council speakers,'€ said Tongat.
