Hasanuddin University (Unhas) deputy rector and lecturer Musakkir was arrested by local police in Makassar on Friday at a hotel for allegedly consuming shabu-shabu (crystal methamphetamine) with two female students and two men (The Jakarta Post, Nov 15) .

This incident is both embarrassing and heartbreaking. Drug crimes are being committed by those who understand the law and educational leaders.

Drug abuse in Indonesia is now at an emergency stage.

The prevalence of drug abuse from year to year has increased. It is predicted in 2015 that the estimated number of drug users in Indonesia will reach 5.8 million.

The number of drug users to date has reached 4 million according to the National Narcotics Agency (BNN). Indonesia is considered a drug haven as well as home to a hedonistic lifestyle where most citizens are easy targets for drug dealers.

There must be extraordinary measures to combat and prevent drug abuse.

The message '€œsay no to drugs'€ does not seem strong enough to prevent the widespread circulation of drugs, so both government and society must declare a total war on drugs.

The campaign to make drugs our common enemy should be continuous.

The discovery of a new type of drug by BNN proves that drug crime is growing and systematic.

Law enforcement officers should pursue the users, dealers and manufacturers of illicit goods.

Don'€™t be hypocritical.

All parties should cooperate and coordinate to create a system of strict eradication and effective prevention. There are at least three coping strategies to prevent drug taking.

First, we must enforce the death penalty. Examples of this in Malaysia have proven effective enough to significantly reduce drug-related crime there.

Second, there must be strict action taken against the eradication of drugs in all fields, including intelligence, police and prisons. We often see that some of these elements are easily tempted to get directly involved in the sale and purchase of illicit goods.

Third, we should immediately enforce a drug testing system that can be applied to students, teachers, government employees, political party members and community officials.
