Indonesia joins ICC EAP event

ndonesia is among 10 participants at the 2014 International Cricket Council (ICC) East Asia-Pacific (EAP) Men'€™s Trophy in Lismore, New South Wales, Australia, which runs Nov. 19-23.

The other seven teams are Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, Japan, the Cook Islands and the Philippines. The event was last held in Auckland in January 2013, where PNG defeated Vanuatu in the finals with the Fijians placing third.

The tournament champions will advance through to the 2015 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier to be held in Ireland and Scotland in July 2015. This qualifier will be a 14-team event with the top six qualifying for the ICC World Twenty20 2016. At the conclusion of the event, the top four nations, not including PNG and Vanuatu, will take part in a 50 over competition. The winner of that event will join Vanuatu in World Cricket League Division 6.

'€œThe 2014 Pepsi ICC East Asia-Pacific Men'€™s Trophy is a stepping stone for regional countries like Indonesia to play at the highest level, competing among the best in the world,'€ Jakarta Cricket Association (JCA) president Randy Reckerman said in a press release.

'€œThe Indonesian team headed by William Noronha has a mix of experience and youth on the squad with a goal of long-term development of the sport in their country. It is also a proud moment for JCA that two of the ICC EAP Umpires Panel '€” Suresh Subramanin and S. Gopalkrishnan are representing Indonesia in the tournament'€ said JCA media coordinator Deepak Khullar.
