he Jakarta Transportation Agency, the Organization of Land Transportation Owners (Organda) and the Jakarta Transportation Council have agreed to increase the capital's regular public transportation fare by Rp 1,000 (8 US cents) on Wednesday.
The current regular public transportation fare in Jakarta is Rp 3,000.
Agency head Muhammad Akbar said that the decision would be reported to the newly inaugurated Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama immediately so that it could be legalized through a gubernatorial decree.
'We plan to report the decision tomorrow [on Thursday]. We hope that he [Ahok] will agree,' said Akbar at his office as quoted by kompas.com
Meanwhile, Organda Jakarta branch chairman Shafruhan Sinungan was hoping that Ahok would soon legalize the decision, so there would be no polemic or confusion over the fare increase.
'There are drivers who have increased their fares by Rp 1,500 and some have even increased their fares by Rp 2,000. Thus, we hope the decree is issued shortly so that the new fare can be applied,' Shafruhan said.
The fare adjustment is aimed at cushioning the impact of the recent fuel-price hikes on land transportation players, including the drivers.
The price of subsidized fuels was increased by Rp 2,000 per liter on Tuesday evening. Premium gasoline increased to Rp 8,500 per liter, while diesel increased to Rp 7,500 per liter. (ask/nfo)(+++)
