President to issue fuel card to fishermen

I

n addition to his three signature cards, President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo will soon launch a fuel card for fishermen to cushion the impact of the subsidized fuel price hike, which came into effect on Tuesday.

'€œNext week [the card] will be tested in one fishing village. If it goes well, the President will launch it,'€ Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry Secretary-General R. Syarief Widjaja said Friday, as reported by kompas.com.

He said that the card would have three functions, making it easier for fishermen to access subsidized fuel, improving the fishermen'€™s revenue bookkeeping, as well as educating fishermen about banking.

Syarief said the bank would credit a certain amount of money to each card to buy subsidized fuel. The money would correspond to the amount of fish caught by the fishermen based on their catch report to the bank.

'€œFor instance, if this month a fisherman caught 20 tons of fish, then next month he would get subsidized fuel based on the catch for next month'€™s operations,'€ he said.

He was confident that such a mechanism would reduce the misuse of subsidized fuels allocated for fishermen.

Syarief, however, declined to reveal the number of fishermen who would receive the cards and the detailed mechanism of the card'€™s usage, saying that everything would be explained after the trial period was over.

The President'€™s three signature cards are the Indonesia Health Card (KIS), Prosperous Family Card (KKS) and Indonesia Smart Card (KIP). (ask/nvn)(++++)
