ome 100,000 visitors were reported to have visited the 2014 Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) art market on Sunday, creating an overcrowded situation at the event.
Chairman of the art market's organizing committee, Ignatius Gerry, said the figure of 100,000 visitors was only an estimation made in the afternoon. 'I have not yet checked with the calculating division,' Ignatius said Sunday.
The event, which is held every four years, presents various fine arts and handicraft products, which were sold much cheaper than in a fine art exhibition.
The event was held for the first time in 1972 and has developed into one of both ITB's and Bandung city's icons.
Initiator of the art market, lecturer and artist, Ad Pirous, said he never imagined that the event would become as crowded as it currently is. 'People cannot move. This is a failure because its too successful,' Pirous said. (***)
