he Jakarta administration will commence a trial motorcycle ban on Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat in Central Jakarta on Dec. 17 and is currently preparing 11 existing buildings for motorcycle parking.
Jakarta Transportation Agency deputy head Benjamin Bukit said that the city would fully implement the ban starting early February 2015. He went on to say that the 11 buildings were Gedung Jaya, Bank Dagang Negara (BDN) Building, Djakarta Theater, Sarinah, BII Building, Oil Center Building, Plaza Permata, Wisma Kosgoro, Pullman Hotel/Wisma Nusantara, Grand Indonesia and The City Tower, all in Central Jakarta.
'The city administration has signed agreements with the management of the 11 buildings. The managements have agreed to provide parking spaces for motorcyclists,' Benjamin said in Jakarta on Monday.
In total, he said, the 11 buildings had the capacity to hold 9,318 cars and 5,128 motorcycles. 'After parking their vehicles, motorcyclists are encouraged to take public transportation,' Benjamin said.
Benjamin said that parking areas at Carrefour Harmoni in Central Jakarta as well as the National Monument (Monas) IRTI would also be optimized to make space for motorcycles.
'For the time being, parking rates will be in accordance with each building's current rate,' he said. Parking rates in the buildings range from Rp 2,000 (16 US cent) to Rp 4,000 per hour.
