City, banks sign MoU to improve financial literacy

T

he Jakarta administration signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with private lender Citibank and city-owned lender Bank DKI to improve financial literacy among youngsters.

According to a survey conducted by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) in 2013, only 28 percent of student respondents had good knowledge of finance.

'€œDue to this low percentage, Citibank, along with the Jakarta administration and Bank DKI, is committed to improve financial literacy both among youngsters and adults,'€ Citibank Indonesia country officer Tigor Siahaan said during the MoU signing ceremony at City Hall on Wednesday.

Tigor said that Citibank would use its comic character, Agent Penny, to teach students about finance.

Meanwhile, Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama said that he supported the program in the hope that it would help establish a financially smart and cashless society. '€œChildren must understand finance from an early age so they know how to manage money when they are older,'€ he said. (***)
