The German government has unveiled what it says is the world's first dedicated medevac plane for Ebola patients.
The Airbus A340-300 has been equipped with an isolation unit, two airlocks, an air filtration system and a separate cabin where doctors can decontaminate their protective suits.
The 14-year-old aircraft was refitted in cooperation with German airline Lufthansa and the country's Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases.
Health Minister Hermann Groehe said Thursday the plane should reassure German volunteers helping fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa that "if they get infected we will do everything humanly possible to bring them quickly to the best possible medical care."
The plane can only transport one patient at a time. Germany has said other nations will be able to use the plane, too. (*)
