he decision of the Ministry of Cultural and Elementary andSecondary Education to stop the usage of the 2013 learning curriculum is beingpraised by many school managements. The schools say, however, that the decisionwould further confuse students.
Frans Sugi, chairman of the Pangudi Luhur Foundation, which has 81 elementary to senior high schools in many cities, acknowledged that the 2013 learning curriculum had brought great confusion to both teachers and students.
He said the curriculum was actually good in spirit but because of improper preparations it resulted solely in confusion among students.
'The schools under the Pangudi Luhur Foundation were actually not ready to implement the curriculum, but then we had to implement it because the ministry told us to do so,' he said.
Basuki Sugita, a teacher at the Keluarga Kudus Catholic Junior High School in Kudus, also praised the cancelation, but warned that the students who are currently in the 8th grade would suffer the most.
'The 8th grade students have passed the 7th grade by using the 2006 curriculum and when they entered the 8th grade they were using the 2013 curriculum and now they will be getting the 2006 curriculum once again. This will be confusing for them,' he said.
Therefore, he suggested the school management help the students bridge the gap so they could use the 2006 curriculum smoothly.
Minister of Cultural and Elementary and Secondary Education Anies Baswedan ordered the halt in using the 2013 curriculum after conducting a series of studies regarding the current curriculum. Among the criticisms against the 2013 curriculum was that it has failed to bring clearer understanding to the students.(dic)
