he occupational accident rate in Jambi remains high as the number of such accidents has reached 820 this year, slightly down from 888 in 2013.
The head of the service section of the Workers Social Security Management Agency office in Jambi, Yusman, said here on Friday that the high occupational accident rate had to do with companies' low awareness of the occupational safety and health program (K3).
Yusman said that of the 820 workers who were involved in accidents at their workplace, 139 had died. The firms whose workers dominated the occupational accident list were PT WKS, PT Pesut and PT Lontar Papirus.
He further said that his office had paid more than Rp 5.7 billion (US$475,000) in compensation to 681 victims, including the ones that died.
He admitted that the number of occupational accident cases this year was lower but the amount of paid insurance claims was higher.
'The number of occupational accidents in 2013 was 888, including 150 fatalities, but the amount of compensation paid to the victims was only Rp 5 billion,' he said.
He added that the amount of old-age benefits paid to 6,769 workers entering their retirement age this year was Rp 54.5 billion. (rms)(+++)
