The regencies are home to 70,000 hectares (ha) and 30,000 ha of rice fields, respectively. If one ha can produce 5 tons of rice, rice fields in the regencies can produce 500,000 tons of rice per planting season annually.
'If the two regencies grow rice twice a year, we'll be self-sufficient in rice. We imported 1 million tons of rice last year,' said Amran during a rice field inspection in Seko village, Rambutan district, Banyuasin, on Friday.
After seeing the condition of the rice fields and hearing complaints from farmers, Amran decided to build a 4-kilometer irrigation channel to manage water to the fields.
