he Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO) said on Sunday that it had launched an investigation into suspicious transactions worth more than Rp 1 trillion detected in bank accounts belonging to Southeast Sulawesi Governor Nur Alam following a report filed by the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK).

Junior attorney general for special crimes Widyo Pramono confirmed the investigation, saying that the AGO had increased the status of the PPATK report from examination to preliminary investigation after finding strong grounds for belief that the transactions may be connected with money laundering.

'€œWe have followed up [the PPATK report] and launched a preliminary investigation into it,'€ Widyo told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

He added that the AGO had also launched an investigation into seven other regional heads found by the PPATK to own suspiciously large bank accounts.

'€œI cannot reveal their names now. What I can tell you is that the Southeast Sulawesi [governor] is one of several regional heads currently being investigated by the AGO,'€ Widyo explained.

The Post has learned that of the Rp 1 trillion in irregular transactions in question, as much as US$4.5 million was transferred to the National Mandate Party (PAN) politician from a mining company based in Hong Kong. The AGO is still ascertaining the reasons for the transfer.

It remains unclear whether the transfer was related to mining permits that Alam approved in his capacity as Southeast Sulawesi governor.

Many local and international mining companies operate in the region because of its richness in natural resources including nickel, asphalt and gold.

Separately, PPATK deputy chairman Agus Santoso confirmed that the agency had handed to the AGO the results of a number of investigations into the financial activities of regional heads possibly related to money laundering. Agus refused to disclose the names of any of the suspects.

He added that the PPATK had also submitted reports on several regional heads to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for further investigation.

'€œThe PPATK is ready to assist the AGO and the KPK in their investigations,'€ Agus told the Post on Sunday.

Generally, the KPK or AGO ask the PPATK to probe a graft suspect'€™s financial records. If the suspect'€™s bank accounts contain amounts incommensurate with his or her status as a public official, the former two agencies may investigate further.
