The Pekanbaru municipality has toughened a bylaw on waste management by increasing fines against litterbugs.
The Pekanbaru municipality and city council passed the bylaw that regulates punishment against those found littering, with fines ranging from Rp 2.5 million (US$200) to Rp 50 million and prison sentences ranging from three to six months.
Golkar Party faction chairman at the Pekanbaru municipal council and former waste management draft bylaw special committee head Masni Ernawati said the imposition of the fines would not only apply to the public, but also the industrial and private sectors.
'The penalties do not only apply to residents, but extend to the industrial sector to curb waste dumping. The bylaw has regulated the criteria,' said Masni on Tuesday. (***)
