n order to anticipate rainy-season floods, Menteng district officers have demolished 50 illegal buildings along the banks of the Anyar River in Central Jakarta.
Menteng district head Bondan Diah Ekowati said on Thursday that many residents had built terraces and front yards on the river banks, causing the neighborhood to be frequently hit by flooding during the rainy season.
'After the demolition, the Central Jakarta Public Works office will start normalizing the river as well as constructing the sheet piles,' Bondan said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Central Jakarta Public Order Office (Satpol PP) operational department chief Maruli Sijabat said his office had deployed 130 personnel for the program. They were also assisted by military and police officers.
'The buildings were solid; it took a long time to demolish all of them,' he said.
During the operation, residents seemed to accept the demolition of their houses, as the district office had announced the plan several times. (***)
