n a bid to encourage residents not to litter, the Sanitation Agency is installing 1,809 attractive waste bins in various forms in five municipalities.

Sanitation Agency head Saptastri Ediningtyas said on Thursday that her agency was distributing the waste bins in the form of dolphins, apples, mangoes, frogs and pandas. Beos and Fatahilah Square in West Jakarta are among the locations provided with the new waste bins.

'€œBy installing the cute waste bins, we hope to encourage residents to throw away garbage in the right place,'€ she said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.

Saptartri said the bins had three colors ¬'€” green for organic waste, yellow for inorganic waste and red for hazardous waste. Her agency spent around Rp 9 billion (US$720,000) to have them made.

The dozens of new waste bins in Beos station attracted the attention of commuters and motorcyclists.

'€œThey look cute. I was curious as to what they were. They turned out to be garbage bins,'€ remarked Sulis, a 30-year-old motorcyclist.

Sulis said she hoped that the waste bins would increase people'€™s awareness of sanitation.

Recently, the Sanitation Agency also launched the '€œGarbage Picking-Up Day'€ movement, calling on residents to spare 30 minutes every Friday morning to pick up garbage wherever they were. However, the movement has so far failed to excite the enthusiasm of the public. (***)
