he city administration has removed thousands of items from next year's city budget, down to about 20,000 from 54,000 entries the previous year, citing increased efficiency as the reason.
The City Council has been deliberating the budget proposal and is scheduled to finish in early January.
'About 34,000 items have been removed,' Andi Baso Mappapoleonro, the head of the Regional Development Planning Body (Bappeda), said as quoted by beritajakarta.com on Saturday.
The cuts were in line with Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama's instruction to achieve budget efficiencies. The items proposed by each working unit were carefully selected.
Andi said that having learned from previous years, much of the proposed spending was for fictitious programs.
The efficiencies were expected to reduce the city's budget by between 30 percent and 50 percent, Andi claimed. (***)
