Thousands of police personnel safeguard Christmas celebrations

T

he Central Sulawesi Police say they have readied at least 2,000 personnel to secure Christmas and New Year'€™s Eve celebrations in areas across the province. Police personnel will be deployed in all areas prone to security disturbances, from tourism sites to houses of worship.

Central Sulawesi Police chief Brig. Gen. Idham Azis said that no special security operation was being held for this year'€™s Christmas celebration. The police were taking security precautions similar to those taken during previous celebrations.

'€œWe just built security posts and public service centers in crowded areas and on roads prone to landslides and traffic accidents. We will place a number of National Police and Indonesian Military personnel at every post,'€ Idham said on the sidelines of a call for readiness at the Central Sulawesi governor'€™s office in Palu, on Wednesday.

Thousands of police and military personnel as well as officers from other related institutions attended the ceremony, led by Central Sulawesi Governor Longki Djanggola, which aimed to ensure the readiness of all personnel to secure Christmas and New Year'€™s Eve celebrations in the province.

Longki said it was hoped that Central Sulawesi residents could maintain tolerant behavior between religious communities so that the situation in the province remained secure.

He also urged all Central Sulawesi residents not to be easily provoked by issues purportedly spread by certain groups or people to disrupt peace and security in the province, especially in Palu. (ebf)
