The other plan concerning commuter trains is to build over- and underpasses above and below railway crossings to reduce traffic congestion.
'We are going to rehabilitate the land along the railways, turning it into nice parks,' Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Wednesday.
During his visit to the Transportation Ministry to meet with Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan, Djarot also discussed the plan to build the over- and underpasses at railway crossings.
He said the construction was scheduled to start next year. The funds have been allocated in the city budget, but the exact figure has not yet been finalized.
The subsidiary of KAI that handles commuter trains from cities
surrounding Jakarta to the capital, PT KAI Commuter Jakarta (KCJ) transported up to 730,000 passengers daily as of December this year on a total of 739 trips from Bekasi, Depok, Bogor, Tangerang and South Tangerang.
The company aims to convey 1.2 million passengers every day by the end of 2018.
