team from the Jakarta Police's violent crimes sub-directorate is continuing intensive investigations into six Indonesians, believed to be sympathizers of the Islamic State (IS) movement, who were arrested at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Saturday allegedly en route to Syria.
Violent crimes sub-directorate chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Herry Herawan said the first thing that the police were investigating was the funding for the group's travels. He suggested that the six, all natives of Makassar, were attempting travel to Syria having received the funding to do so from an unknown donor.
Police also suspect that the travel documents the group was using most likely came from the same mysterious benefactor.
'Right now we are investigating where they got the money for this trip. We will also investigate the use of false documents,' Herry said on Saturday as quoted by kompas.com.
The Jakarta Police will coordinate their investigation with the National Police's Densus 88 counterterrorism unit and the immigration directorate general.
The four men, one woman and one child were arrested at about 3 a.m. on Saturday.
They were scheduled to leave for Syria on Qatar Airways flight QR 950 at 4:30 a.m. via Doha.
The group was arrested following a tip-off from intelligence agencies and in coordination with the airport's immigration office. The six were arrested on suspicion of using false passports. (dyl/nvn)
