he Indonesian Embassy in Singapore opened an information center for the families of passengers and crew members aboard AirAsia Flight QZ8501, which went missing en route from Surabaya, East Java, to Singapore, on Sunday.
Indonesian Embassy protocol and consular affairs head Sukmo Yuwono told The Jakarta Post on Sunday that posts had been opened at Singapore's Changi Airport and at the embassy at No.7 Chatsworth Road, in Singapore, shortly after they became aware of the missing AirAsia aircraft.
'Until this point, no families of AirAsia passengers in Singapore have contacted the information centers. We have deployed two embassy staff members to work with AirAsia to receive and update information [on the incident] at our post at Changi Airport,' said Sukmo.
Separately, Hang Nadim International Airport acting head in Batam, Suwarso, said Flight QZ8501 was not flying via the Batam or Riau Islands flight information region (FIR) route but via the FIR Jakarta-Singapore direct route.
'FIR Jakarta-Singapore directly handled the flight,' he said.
Sea Security Agency (Bakamla) spokesperson Col. Edy Fernandi said the agency had dispatched one vessel to conduct search operations for the aircraft in waters around the Riau Islands and Kalimantan.
'We have sent one vessel to trace the whereabouts of the aircraft,' said Edy, adding that the vessel had been dispatched from Batam at 5 p.m. local time on Sunday. (ebf)(++++)
