ndonesia has expressed its disappointment over the recent decision by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) not to adopt a draft resolution on Palestine on Dec. 30, which called for the withdrawal of all Israeli forces by 2017.

'€œThe Indonesian government continues to support the struggle of the Palestinian people in establishing an independent and sovereign state and ending Israel'€™s illegal occupation in Palestine. [We] encourage the UNSC to push for a peaceful settlement between Palestine and Israel in accordance with the two-state solution,'€ said the Foreign Ministry in a statement.

The draft UN resolution called for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Palestinian territories by the end of 2017 and for the reconvening of negotiations between Palestine and Israel to reach a comprehensive agreement within one year.

Only eight out of 15 members of the Security Council voted for the resolution, leaving it one vote short of the nine votes needed to pass.

'€œIn accordance with the UN charter, the UNSC has the responsibility to maintain international peace and security. [Its] failure to adopt the resolution reflects the council'€™s ineffectiveness in carrying out that responsibility,'€ the statement read.

Indonesia'€™s support for the Palestinian cause is provided bilaterally and through collaborative efforts such as through the New Asia-Africa Strategic Partnership (NAASP) and the Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD), of which Indonesia has committed US$1.5 million for training in various fields of infrastructure, information technology, agriculture and tourism.
