The government will optimize its research activities to strengthen the country's food sovereignty, according to a Cabinet minister.
'The findings of the research must be used to improve our food sovereignty. With proper research results, I believe we will be able to meet our food production target,' said Research and Technology and Higher Education Minister Muhammad Nasir on Monday.
Earlier, Padjadjaran University (Unpad) agriculture expert Drajat Sudrajat said Indonesia ranked 70th in terms of food security, even though the country had abundant natural resources.
'Indonesia has the potential to improve its food security as it has [a huge] market, natural resources and human resources,' Drajat said as quoted by Antara news agency.
However, Indonesia still has to work hard to catch up with India, Vietnam, and even Singapore, which now has good food security, he said at a seminar on higher education institutions and food diversification.
Meanwhile, Agriculture Ministry food security head Achmad Suryana said Indonesia needed to properly manage its potential to be able to develop its food security. (***)
