After criticism, Tedjo keeps his silence

F

ollowing strong protests surrounding a recent remark about supporters of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno stayed silent on Tuesday, refusing to give any comments to the media.

Tedjo was lambasted on social media and at rallies for calling supporters of KPK '€” which has seen deputy chairman Bambang Widjojanto declared a suspect by the National Police '€” '€œobscure citizens'€. He argued that not all citizens supported the KPK as some also took to the streets to support the police.

Over the weekend more people showed that they stood behind the antigraft body, including academicians from Jakarta and Yogyakarta.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla said he had summoned Tedjo in regards to the statement and reminded him to use proper language in public. Kalla said President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo had also warned the Nasdem Party politician to choose his words wisely.

Wearing a white shirt, Tedjo arrived at his office on Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. and remained tight-lipped in front of reporters who had waited for him since the morning.

'€œBapak [Tedjo] does not want to do any interviews; just wait for when he comes out of his room and maybe wants to say something,'€ said Arifin, one of Tedjo'€™s staff members, as quoted by viva.co.id.

A former Navy chief, Tedjo has been known for his controversial remarks on various issues, which have frequently triggered public outrage. In December, Tedjo also drew anger from human rights campaigners after making a statement stressing that unresolved human rights cases were things of the past that should not be resolved. (***)
