Cost of executing death-row convicts reaches Rp 200 million each

T

he Attorney General's Office executed the first batch of death-row drug convicts on Jan. 18, five of them facing the firing squad on Nusakambangan Island, Central Java, and one in Boyolali, Central Java.

Attorney General HM Prasetyo said on Wednesday that executing death-row convicts cost about Rp 200 million (US$15,999) each.

"In connection with the executions, Rp 200 million is earmarked for each convict," Prasetyo said in a hearing with Commission III of the House of Representatives.

The cost covers all necessities starting from the preparation to the implementation of the execution, he said.

Prasetyo explained that aside from Nusakambangan and Boyolali, executions had also been planned in the Thousand Islands, off Jakarta.

"Initially two of the convicts were to be executed in the Thousand Islands. However, the cost would have been Rp 258 million, more than the allocated funds," he said without giving details.

The six executed convicts were:

1. Namaona Denis, a 48-year-old male Malawian. He was sentenced in 2001 and his appeal for clemency was turned down on Dec. 30, 2014.

2. Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira, a 52-year-old male Brazilian, was sentenced in 2004.

3. Daniel Enemuo, a 38-year-old male Nigerian. Sentenced in 2004 and his clemency bid turned down on Dec. 30, 2014.

4. Ang Kiem Soei, alias Kim Ho, alias Ance Tahir, alias Tommi Wijaya, a 62-year-old Dutchman. Sentenced in 2003, his appeal for clemency was turned down on Dec. 30, 2014.

5. Tran Thi Bich Hanh, a 37-year-old female Vietnamese. Sentenced in 2011. She did not appeal her verdict but immediately asked for clemency, which was rejected.

6. Rani Andriani, alias Melisa Aprilia, a 38-year-old female Indonesian. Sentenced in 2000, her clemency bid was turned down on Dec. 30, 2014. (hhr)(+++)
