he Indonesian Military (TNI) has confirmed that the construction of a Malaysian border post off Kayu Mati Island, Nunukan, North Kalimantan, does not infringe on Indonesian territorial waters.
Nunukan Military Commander Lt. Col. Putra Widiastama said that a ground check had confirmed that the currently under construction Malaysian military post did not breach any agreements between the two countries.
He said that the TNI was referring to an agreement in 1891 in London between Britain and the Netherlands, then the respective occupying powers in Malaysia and Indonesia, stipulating that the area in which the border post is located belongs to Malaysia.
'Based on agreements [between the Netherlands and Britain], the post off the tip of Kayu Mati Island is considered Malaysian territory,' he said on Saturday as quoted by Antara news agency.
Earlier, local residents had reported the construction of the post at the eastern tip of the island, worried that it was built in Indonesian waters. (***)
