he Association of Indonesian Businesspeople of Chinese Descent and the Tahir Foundation have channeled Rp 7 billion (US$545,968) in grants to finance flood-mitigation projects in the capital.
The grant was accepted by Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama in a symbolic ceremony at City Hall on Wednesday, a day before the Chinese New Year.
Ahok said the funds would be used to purchase generators to support pump houses during the rainy season. He recently blamed the state-owned electricity company PLN for shutting down power supplies to several pump houses in North Jakarta during heavy rains, which resulted in flooding in a number of areas. It will also be used to repair some water pumps, electricity substations and drainage.
'The funds will be very useful. It should be transferred to PLN's contractor, instead of being handed down to us ['¦]. This way, there will be no reason for PLN to shut down the power supply to our pump houses,' he said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Tahir Foundation CEO Dato Sri Tahir said the grant was part of the businesspeople's responsibility as Jakarta residents. (swd)
