he Kemayoran District Office has shut down 16 illegal garbage disposal sites (TPS) in eight subdistricts following complaints from residents.
Kemayoran district head Herry Purnama said on Tuesday that many residents had filed complaints, raising concerns of possible sanitation problems.
'The illegal TPS have violated the public order and caused sanitation problems in surrounding neighborhoods,' Herry said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Herry said he hoped that shutting down the illegal dumps would encourage residents to dispose of waste in designated sites.
He said he also had ordered subdistrict heads to put up notices reminding people of the legal sanctions of littering.
'We also coordinate with the Sanitation Agency's regional office to remove garbage at night, so as not to get in the way of residents,' he added.
It is common for residents who wish to avoid paying garbage-disposal fees to instead dump their household trash in nearby vacant spaces.
