The Papua Police have arrested a participant in the National Committee of Indonesian Youth (KNPI) congress held in Jayapura for allegedly beating a plenary session chairman late at night on Thursday.
The arrested participant was identified as Tri Desviadi Wiratma of the Garda API (Indonesian Youth Force) Palembang while the beaten plenary session chairman was Achmad Suhawi of Jakarta.
'The victim of the beating reported the incident to the police promptly last night and the perpetrator is being detained at police headquarters,' Papua Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Patrige Renwarin said on Friday.
He said Tri had been named a suspect and would be charged with violating Article 351 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) on persecution, which carries a penalty of two years' imprisonment.
He said the victim was hit three times and the motive was still being investigated.
