nlike Budi Gunawan's legal case, the Abraham Samad and Bambang Widjojanto cases will continue in accordance with the law, says Attorney General M. Prasetyo.
'The cases of the two suspended leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission [KPK], namely Abraham Samad and Bambang Widjojanto, being handled by the police will be settled in a different way from the BG case and that is why the cases will continue to proceed in accordance with the law,' he said at the KPK building in South Jakarta on Monday.
He said, however, that the investigations into Abraham and Bambang would not be automatically be halted in return for the handover of Budi's case to the police because the cases implicating the two suspended KPK leaders were based on reports from the public.
Bambang was named a suspect for allegedly directing a witness to give false testimony at the Constitutional Court in the hearing of a West Kotawaringin election dispute in July 2010, while Abraham has been declared a suspect in two cases. In the first case, Abraham is thought to have abused his authority by reportedly helping a Pontianak woman, Ferriyani Lim, obtain an ID card and family card to apply for a passport at the Makassar Immigration Office in 2007. In the second case, he allegedly violated the 1999 Corruption Law when he met elite figures of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) to lobby the party to become its vice presidential candidate before the July 9, 2014 presidential election.
'The three cases implicating the suspects will be submitted to the AGO for further handling,' Prasetyo said as quoted by kompas.com.
After receiving Budi's dossier from the KPK, Prasetyo handed it over to the police in a ceremony at the KPK building.
The KPK named Police Education Institute head Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan a suspect on Jan 13, 2014, a day before he underwent a confirmation hearing in regard to being the sole candidate for the top cop job before House of Representatives Commission III on law, prompting the President to suspend his inauguration.
Meanwhile, deputy police chief Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti implied that the police would likely halt the police investigation into Budi.
'Before deciding on whether to halt the investigation into the case or not, the police will study the case, especially at least two pieces of evidence,' he said.
Badrodin added that the police would start their investigation into Budi from scratch even though they had looked into the case once before.
The handing over of Budi's case to the police is expected to raise a new polemic, especially regarding the objectiveness of the police. (rms)(++++)
