overnor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama handed out Health care and Social Security (BPJS) cards to 13,322 inmates at six prisons in the city to provide them with decent health care.
Ahok said he came up with the idea while visiting a prison in Salemba in Central Jakarta last year, where he grew concerned about sick inmates. The BPJS cards, he said, were only valid during their prison terms. Once they were released, the inmates must fill out new documents.
'I felt sorry for the inmates as they were not provided with health care. So we will provide them with health care. After all, they are residents of Jakarta, too,' Ahok said during the hand over event at Pondok Bambu prison in East Jakarta on Friday as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
He went on to say that all general hospitals in Jakarta must provide decent service to all BPJS holders. The inmates, Ahok said, would be categorized as displaced people and that the city would pay their premiums.
