en regencies and cities around Toba Lake in North Sumatra are seeking entry to the UNESCO Global Geopark Network (GGN) with the Toba Caldera Geopark, which could be inducted into the network by August or September.
Samosir Regent Mangindar Simbolon said the 10 regency/city administrations had been preparing by planning to participate in the Asia Pacific Geopark Network meeting to be held in Langkawi, Malaysia, from March 17-31.
'We will seek support for Toba Lake to be acknowledged as a member of the UNESCO GGN,' Simbolon told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
He said the lake's extraordinary geosites were strong reasons for it to be acknowledged as a member of the network. There are some 50 unique and rare geosite spots in Toba Lake, he said, most of which were located on Samosir Island in the middle of the lake.
Simbolon also said the government had sent the proposal to UNESCO and a UNESCO team would visit Toba to conduct a pre-examination in March or April, returning in August or September to facilitate the examination of the proposed geopark.
