BMKG warns of possible disasters during weather transition

T

he Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned people to be vigilant of possible bad weather and natural disasters during the transition into the dry season in the middle of the year.

BMKG head Andi Eka Satya said on Wednesday that disasters could occur throughout the archipelago. '€œTornadoes, strong winds and hail may occur during the transition period,'€ he said in Jakarta.

Andi said that each of Indonesia'€™s 342 weather zones had different characteristics, with most zones'€™ transition periods set to fall between March and June, beginning with eastern Sumatra and northern Kalimantan in March.

In April it will be Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and the southern part of Sulawesi.

In May, Andi said, a humid dry spell would occur in almost all parts of the archipelago, while in June, almost all areas would enter the dry season.

'€œThe transition into the dry season is marked by rainfall of below 150 mm,'€ he said as quoted by Antara news agency. (++++)
