he Makassar Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has seized thousands of illegal cosmetics from a distribution center in the Daya area of Makassar, South Sulawesi.
BPOM inspection and investigation division head Hamka Hasan said Wednesday the contraband was confiscated on Tuesday afternoon after it was traced from products distributed in the regions.
'We found many cosmetics without permits that were sold in the province. Then we tracked them. On Tuesday, we eventually found the suppliers' address,' said Hamka.
During the raid, BPOM officers were backed by personnel from the South Sulawesi Police.
They confiscated 94 types of cosmetics in thousands of boxes. The whole stock was valued at around Rp 1 billion (US$76,000).
Makassar BPOM investigation section head Madania said based on the investigation, the illegal operation had existed for quite a long time and sales had been carried out via the Internet, social media and by telephone.
