n earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit Banggai, Central Sulawesi, at 6:16 a.m. local time on Monday did not have potential to cause a tsunami.
The earthquake was felt by residents as far as Gorontalo, who were shocked by the tremor and rushed to get out of their houses.
"The tremor was felt but it took place only over a short time," Iman, a local resident, said as quoted by Antara news agency. No reports on damage or casualties are yet available.
Lampung's Kotabumi Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) spokesman Yuharman said the epicenter of the quake was at 0.52 degrees south and 122.36 degrees east at a depth of 10 km.
It was located at Minahasa peninsula, or 58 km northeast of Banggai, 132 km southeast of Boalemo, 140 km southwest of Gorontalo, and 1.836 km northeast of Jakarta.
Also at 4:19 a.m. on Monday, another earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted Malang regency in East Java.
The epicenter was located at 9.78 degrees south and 112.82 degrees east at a depth of 10 km, or some 174 km southeast of Malang, 276 km southeast of Surabaya, and 777 km southeast of Jakarta. (hhr)
