ontemporary music composer Slamet Abdul Sjukur died on Tuesday morning in Surabaya, East Java, after suffering from a bone fracture since March 9.
His sister, Elisawati, said that Slamet suffered from a bone fracture after falling when he was alone at his house on March 9, adding that he struggled for two hours to reach his bedroom.
'He refused to be hospitalized. Only after the fracture on his right haunch was swollen did he agree to go to Dr. Soetomo Hospital [in Surabaya] but he refused to undergo an operation until Monday [March 23],' she said as quoted by tempo.co.
Elisawati said, however, that Slamet never underwent the operation due to his deteriorating condition.
Slamet was born on June 30, 1935 in Surabaya under the name Soekandar. He studied music at the Indonesian Music Academy (SMIND) in Yogyakarta from 1952 to 1956 and later spent 14 years studying music in Paris with a French government grant.
Slamet received numerous European awards including an Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) from the French government and the Zoltán Kodály Commemorative Medal from Hungary. During celebrations for his 79th birthday last year, his friends and admirers published a 334-page Festschrift to the man they called 'the father of Indonesian contemporary music'.(idk)(+++)
