Barcelona tops AP Global Football 10 after beating Madrid

B

arcelona topped the Associated Press Global Football 10 on Tuesday after beating Real Madrid 2-1 in the clasico and reaching the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Luis Enrique's side followed up a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in Europe with a win over its domestic rival to move four points clear atop the Spanish league with 10 matches remaining.

"Considering how dominant Real Madrid looked for so long, Barcelona being in first in La Liga - by four points - is a shocking development that I don't think many of us could have seen coming," Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said.

Manchester United was runner-up for winning 2-1 against Liverpool at Anfield and strengthening its position in the top four of the Premier League at the expense of its old rival.

Juventus polled third after eliminating Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and beating Genoa 1-0 in Serie A to keep its 14-point lead in the standings.

Bundesliga high-flier Borussia Moenchengladbach entered this week's poll in fourth after inflicting a first home defeat of the season upon leader Bayern Munich, 2-0.

Chelsea took fifth place, and Paris Saint-Germain, Fiorentina, Arsenal, Valencia and Atletico Madrid completed the top 10.

Carlos Tevez was leading player for scoring three goals across two games for Juventus. Tevez struck twice as Dortmund was beaten 3-0 in the Champions League, and also scored the decisive goal against Genoa, where he also missed a penalty.

"Carlos Tevez just had an incredible week," Aurelio Capaldi of RAI Sport in Italy said. "He scored a fantastic double in Dortmund to allow Juventus to go through to the Champions League quarterfinals, and was again the main man as Juventus beat Genoa and became closer to wining their fourth consecutive scudetto."

Luis Suarez's winner for Barcelona against Madrid placed him above Harry Kane, who took third for marking his first summons for England with a hat trick in Tottenham's 4-3 win over Leicester.

"Luis Suarez scored his most valuable goal for Barcelona," Tito Puccetti of ESPN in Argentina said. "It determined the clasico."

Juan Mata scored both of United's goals against Liverpool and placed fourth, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic was a place behind after scoring a hat trick in PSG's 3-1 win at home to Lorient on Friday.

Moenchengladbach's Raffael was sixth, Lionel Messi seventh, and Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud and Joe Hart rounded out the top 10.
