.S. stocks eked out a gain Wednesday after deal news in the health care sector gave the market at lift. Gains were offset by a big drop in energy companies prompted by a slump in oil prices.
On Wednesday:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 27.09 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,902.51.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 5.57 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,081.90.
The Nasdaq composite gained 40.59 points, or 0.8 percent, to 4,950.82.
For the week:
The Dow is up 139.27 points, or 0.8 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 14.94 points, or 0.7 percent.
The Nasdaq has gained 63.88 points, or 1.3 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 79.44 points, or 0.5 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 23 points, or 1.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 214.77 points, or 4.5 percent. (***)
