National scene: PDI-P confirms reshuffling recommendation

T

he Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has confirmed a plan to recommend a shake-up in President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s Cabinet during its national congress last weekend.

PDI-P deputy secretary-general Ahmad Basarah said Wednesday that several ministers were considered to be underperforming.

'€œMany ministers have been found to not be working optimally to help President Jokowi and Vice President Jusuf Kalla run the administration,'€ he said on Wednesday as quoted by detik.com.

Basarah said the congress advised the President to replace the underperforming ministers. '€œThose who do not perform well or do not understand the Cabinet'€™s vision should leave,'€ he said.

Basarah added that since Cabinet appointments were the prerogative of the President, the ruling party would deliver its recommendations in private.

During the party'€™s national congress last week, PDI-P chief Megawati Soekarnoputri repeatedly ordered President Jokowi to obey party instructions, criticizing a group of '€œopportunists'€ who were trying to obstruct his administration.

Observers have speculated that Megawati was referring to non-party ministers Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjojanto and State-Owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno, two figures who have become close aides to the President since the beginning of his presidency.

Presidential Chief of Staff Luhut Panjaitan, who has recently drawn criticism for his appointment of Harvard University graduates as deputies, was also thought to among the ministers responsible for distracting President Jokowi from executing the party'€™s vision.
