J

akarta food lovers may find it hard to leave once they step into the venue of Jakarta Foodies Meet, a culinary event being held in Puri Orchard, Cengkareng, West Jakarta.

The event, part of the launch of Puri Orchard Apartments by PT Adicipta Graha Kencana, features almost 100 food stalls with a variety of Indonesian dishes such as kerak telor (Betawi traditional spicy omelet dish), as well as European food, Korean, Japanese and even Mexican food like nachos.

Visitors can enjoy various appetizers, main dishes and desserts alike from Saturday to Sunday, the event was previously held from April 11 to 12.

'€œWe created this event because everybody likes to eat, everybody likes something new. We also designed the event for families, because many people go out with their families. That'€™s why we also provide a kids'€™ corner,'€ said Devianty Utama, PR manager of Puri Orchard Apartments.

The organizers are also holding special events such as fireworks that were held on Saturday night, as well as street dances, LED dance show, percussion display and a parade of DJs.

Devianty revealed that approximately 4,000 people visited the event last weekend. There was barely a vacant place to sit as hundreds of people also swarmed to the venue on Saturday.

Tomson, a 24-year old visitor from Tanjung Karang, Central Jakarta, said that he came with his five friends after learning about the event from his friend.

'€œI had siomay [steamed fish dumpling], otak-otak [grilled fish cake]. I like it. So many people, so many food items to choose from here,'€ he said.

Many stalls are showcasing new, trendy food items. One of them is Cubite Street Food, a food stall selling a trendy twist on kue cubit, Indonesian snack food in the form of small sized cakes, by adding new flavors such as green tea, red velvet, Nutella hazelnut-chocolate spread, even Oreo biscuits to the snack.

George Pradipta, one of the owners of Cubite Street Food, said that he had just started the business in December 2014 with his two friends. So far, they have two cafes selling the food in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, and Serpong, South Tangerang.

He said he was fully booked from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the event, with more than 200 boxes priced Rp 25,000 (US$2) each sold in a day.

'€œUsually people who buy our product are teenagers. But we don'€™t have a target market, everyone can buy it,'€ he said.

The event also featured non-food stalls selling clothing and shoes.

There are plenty of food varieties on offer at the event. Visitors can taste European dishes such as Dutch croquettes, classic pizza cones, pasta and also waffles. Japanese food is represented by sushi, okonomiyaki and dorayaki.

Indonesian food aficionados can enjoy traditional dishes such as Javanese noodles, satay Padang, dendeng (thinly sliced dried meat) and nasi kebuli (spicy steamed rice popular among Arab Indonesians).

To accompany the meal, there is Betawi's bir pletok (traditional herbal drink made from ginger and pandan leaves) while mochi ice cream as well as Turkish ice cream are available as dessert. (fsu/nvn)(++++)
