Govt to prioritize 7 rights abuse cases

The government has said that seven cases will take priority in its resolution of human rights abuses that have been left unresolved.

'€œThere are seven cases, namely Talangsari, Wamena, Wasior, abductions in Jakarta, mysterious shootings across the country, the Sept.30, 1965, communist coup and the May 1998 rioting,'€ Attorney General M Prasetyo said in Jakarta on Tuesday, referring to well-known cases.

He explained that the government would set up a special team to handle the cases, echoing Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno'€™s earlier statement.

The team, through the existing judiciary system, would process cases in which the suspected perpetrators were still alive and could be questioned, he said.

Prasetyo added that cases that had occurred more than 15 years ago and whose perpetrators had died would be settled through a reconciliation process between the victims'€™ and the perpetrators'€™ relatives.

He added that the team would cooperate with the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) to obtain documentation and new evidence on the cases. (rms)(++++)
