India says Ford Foundation funding must have govt oversight

The Indian government is requiring the Ford Foundation to get clearance from the Home Ministry before spending funds inside the country.

A Home Ministry order issued Thursday says it is aimed at ensuring the money is used "for bona fide welfare activities." It gave no details.

Ford Foundation officials were not immediately available for comment. The private U.S. foundation works in India to help alleviate poverty.

The ministry earlier temporarily suspended the registration of Greenpeace India after saying it underreported foreign contributions and used them without government approval.

The Economic Times daily said the ostensible reason for the government decision against the Ford Foundation was that the recipient non-governmental organizations in India were flouting tax laws. (*****)
