ity planning expert Eddy Ihut Siahaan has said the planned reclamation off the North Jakarta coast could be a solution to the environmental and population density problems in the capital city.
"The reclamation plan has been stalled while the environmental problem needs to be resolved," he said here on Monday.
He predicted that the environmental problem would be worse in the future if the reclamation plan was suspended.
Siahaan said that land subsidence would continue thanks to the increasing number of high-rise buildings and population increase and the mainland would be far lower than the sea level if the reclamation plan was suspended.
"The city administration could anticipate the problem by creating new territory through the reclamation," he said as quoted by kompas.com.
The city administration in cooperation with housing developers have planned to make 20 islets off the North Jakarta coast that would be developed into modern housing and office buildings.
Meanwhile, transportation analyst Yayat Supriyatna said the reclamation plan should be directed to make an independent city that would not overburden the capital city.
"The housing and office areas in the islets should not overburden the traffic in the city," he said. (rms)(+++)
